The Types of Slot Machines

In what some might call the "Goold ole days of slots" the slot machine accepted one coin and you either won or lost. Some of these machine can still be found but usually they are there for nastalgic purposes. A casino filled with these types of machines are gone.

Today the machines accept multiple coins, and payout on multiple lines. Not only do you get more chances at winning but you can increase the payback by inserting more coins. Lets say the machine pays 50 coins for a win on one coin, on two coins you might get 175 coins and with three coins you might get 400 coins for a win. For the machines that payoff on more than one line you will likely have to insert the maximum number of coins to get the largest payout possible, or to get some payoff at all. In this later example on one coin two bells pays nothing but on max coins the slot machine will pay something for the same two bells.

The third type of slot machine is a progressive slot machine. These machines are linked electronically to other similar progressive machines in the casino, in other casinos and even slot machines in other states. These machines will have a larger than normal jackpot that all of the machines contribute too and can payout from.

Those Newfangled Machines

The machines of yesteryear we strickly mechanical in nature that used reels and levers. A talanted person was able to finesse the machine to payout more often than not. The next step in the evolution of the slot machine was the electronic machine. These machines used electronics instead of mechanics to control the payout of the machine. Like the mechanical slot machine, slot cheats were easily able to cheat these slot machines. You can still find some of these machine around today. The most prevelant machine found in today's casinos are controlled by computers and a random number generator chip. These machines can still use reels but they are much harder to cheat by trying to finesse them. Cheating usually involves using brute force, but that usually gets noticed.

The random Number Generator used in modern machines is a computer chip that is programmed to constantly generate a string of random numbers. As long as the machine is turned on the chip is generating numbers. Each of the numbers corresponds to a symbol on the slot machine's reel. Some symbols are connected to a few numbers and other symbols are connect to more numbers. This means that some symbols will appear more often than others. An interesting thing to make note of is the fact that the slot machine's random number generater is contanstantly selecting numbers even when it's not being played. You maybe asking 'If this is the case then how are the symbols selected?' Well there is some debate on this, some feel that the numbers (symbols) are determined when you insert your coins, and other feel that the numbers (symbols) are not selected until you press the spin button (or pull the handle). Either way winning at a slot machine involes nothing but pure luck.
