Slot Players
For most of us playing the slots is a fun past time that holds nothing more than some enjoyment. There are however those that the flashing lights and ringing bells hold them in a hypnotic like trance, these people are slot addicts. For some one machine is not enough, some will play 2 3 or even 4 machines at the same time, insert coins, pull handle, step right, insert coins, pull handle, step right. It is a rythmic action that is repeated over and over again for hours at a time. Sometimes they win big, but more often than not they lose big.Despite what popular culture might lead us to believe, not all people who are slot addicts are from the low rung on the social ladder. Here is one such example on how anyone can be entranced by the flashing lights and ringing bells of the slot machines. A group of 5 New York Socialites were on vaction in Las Vegas when one of the men found a nickle laying ont the floor as they were walking by a slot carosel. The man handed the coin to his wife and group encouraged her to play a slot machine. she did and won a few coins. A few hours later the group was still standing around the same slot machine, now with about a quarter of a bucket or nickles. The group was more than happy to share with anyone that would listen that they had turned a found nickle into a few dollars worth and they were more than happy to announce to the casino each and every win with some loud celibrations.
One slot regular advised the group of 5 to try their luck at a bigger machine. If their luck holds they would be able to win more. To the group of five the advice from the slot machine regular sounded great so they moved to another carosel with some slot machines that had bigger payouts and wouldn't you know it they continued to win. For the next few hours they won some money and moved to a bigger slot machine. The only break since finding that sole nickel was a quick one for diner. Aver the next few days every moment was spent at a slot machine (save for meal breaks) and they were up a few thousand dollars. By the last day they were playing at the dollar machines and their winnings had dwindled down to a few dollars.
When leaving the hotel the group made one last stop at the slot machines and played their last few dollars. The group left Vegas with no more money than they had when they arrived and when asked by their friends back home what they did they all answered, "We took a nickel and used it to pay for a weeks worth of entertainment".
Now is this group of players addicted to slots? No, that was the first time they played and they haven't played since, but they were certainly entranced by the flashing lights and ringing bells of the slot machines.
